Hi, I’m Alison Bieber.
I am a classically trained vocalist, applied linguist, and holistic voice coach based in Grand Rapids, MI with over 10 years of teaching experience. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where I trained in Classical Voice (Opera), and later expanded my interests into more modern and alternative vocal techniques.
Early in my career, I studied at Grand Rapids Community College, where I performed with Opera Grand Rapids in addition to becoming a finalist in the Opera Grand Rapids Collegiate Vocal Competition at 19 years old. During this time, I also collaborated as a soloist with the Grand Rapids Symphony, Failure: Lab, and other community performances. My training later took me abroad to the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria, and to Los Angeles, California, where I participated in the OperaWorks Emerging Artist Program.
My passion for music actually began long before my formal training, when I was writing songs influenced by classic rock, pop, and country music in high school. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with vocalists both nationally and internationally, collaborating with original artists, and tailoring my instruction to support individuals with a wide range of disabilities and varying levels of need.
I approach teaching with the philosophy that music is a language. This belief inspired me to pursue a Master’s degree in Linguistics, focusing on Second Language Acquisition, and to attend summer school in Musicality at the University of Amsterdam. Both experiences allowed me to connect research-based methods with vocal pedagogy.
Ultimately, I believe music should be about the journey, not the destination. My goal as a voice coach is to provide you with the tools to vocalize and feel confident with YOUR voice. Whether you’re looking for advanced technical training, audition prep, or support in developing your artistry, I’d love to work with you and help you reach your goals.
An aside: Outside of teaching, I enjoy horseback riding, knitting and crocheting, and practicing tai chi, qi gong, and other healing, low-impact techniques. During my time at the conservatory, I went to a Renaissance Faire, was bitten by a tick, and developed Lyme disease! It has been a long journey learning how to live and create with chronic Lyme. This life experience significantly shaped my vocal journey and continues to influence my teaching today.
I’ve also become a bit of a cat collector (it’s a slippery slope!) My partner and I adopted four cats in the past year, in addition to the one we already had. Plus, I have a beloved black Labrador who you might meet if you visit the studio. You could say I’m a bit of an animal lover!
